Secondary Care: Health Services
Bill Chase Dental Clinic - was named after the co-founder of 3AO. This program started over 25 years ago with a simple chair and a physician doing tooth extractions. It has grown to be a fully dental equipped dental clinic and teaching facility. Last year, local dentists, dental hygienists, and 19 volunteer dentists (from 6 countries) saw over 13,500 patients. This program relies heavily on volunteer support. If you know a dentist who may be interested, please have them contact our office.
The Laboratory - The laboratory performs a wide range of exams, including interpreting Pap smears, blood and urine tests, among others. The laboratory continues to gain the highest marks for efficiency and quality control from the Brazilian Pathologist Association.
The Medical Clinic - is the centerpiece of 3AO/Fundação Esperança's health care programs. It serves as the referral center for the primary health care programs; it is the source from which surgical patients are selected and prepared, as well as provides postoperative care for the surgical program. It is the site for practical rotations for nursing students and medical students. While the most common problems continue to be intestinal infections, parasites, and skin disease, the clinic also sees patients with leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria, and other tropical diseases.
Women's Health - 3AO and the Fundação Esperança continue to offer the only integrated women's health care in the mid-Amazon. The program provides family planning, treatment of reproductive tract infections, Pap smears, coloscopy, treatment for precancerous lesions (LEEP), and management of menopause. The nursing team offers orientation, counseling, diagnosis, and treatment.
The Surgery Program - brings surgical teams from all over the world to provide operations to low income patients and to teach local surgeons new techniques in plastic, orthopedic, and ophthalmology surgery. Surgeries range from club feet to cleft lips and palettes. This program relies heaving on volunteer support. If you know a surgeon who may be interested, please have them contact our office.
